Washable Bed Pads: How to Choose, Use and Wash Them
Washable bed pads provide a reusable absorbent layer for protecting bedding or a chair. Choose the right size, backing and care requirements for the intended use, and check the individual product specification.
Choose the area of protection
Measure the mattress or chair and the area that needs covering. Check whether the pad is designed for a bed, seat or another use, and whether it has tuck-in sections or other features to help it stay in place.
Check absorbency and backing
Compare the stated absorbency and waterproof backing. A pad protects the surface beneath it; it does not necessarily replace a worn continence product. Do not assume every washable pad is suitable for the same amount of leakage.
Use it as directed
Place the pad according to its instructions and check that it lies smoothly. A pad should not be used as a lifting or transfer aid unless it is specifically designed and approved for that purpose.
Follow the care label
Check washing temperature, detergent guidance and drying instructions. Avoid assuming that a cleaning method suitable for one pad is safe for another. Inspect the absorbent surface and backing for wear and replace a damaged pad.
Compare ongoing costs fairly
Reusable products require laundry and sufficient spare pads. Compare purchase cost, expected use and washing effort with disposable options rather than assuming one is always cheaper or greener.
Continence support
New or troublesome leakage should be discussed with a GP or continence service. Protection products help manage day-to-day needs while the underlying cause is assessed.
