24-Hour Posture Management: A Guide for Carers and OTs
24-hour posture management considers support across the person’s day and night. It should be based on individual assessment, goals and a care plan shared with the people providing assistance.
Consider the whole routine
Discuss time in a wheelchair or chair, time in bed and the tasks between them. Different activities and settings can need different support; one cushion should not be assumed suitable everywhere.
Agree the goals
Comfort, participation and positioning may be priorities. The relevant professionals can assess movement, posture, pressure risk and the equipment already in use.
Specify equipment clearly
Record the intended support, dimensions and position, together with who will assist. Check compatibility with chairs, wheelchairs and mattresses. Avoid substituting a similar-looking item without advice.
Make daily checks practical
Include instructions for checking comfort, skin and equipment condition. Staff or family members should know what to do if the person’s tolerance changes and whom to contact.
Review and maintain
Follow cleaning instructions and replace damaged components. Revisit the plan when needs, equipment or routines change. General product information can assist selection, but it does not replace professional assessment.
